His story began in Mumbai.

Rashad studied in Mumbai beginning in 1938, became politically influenced by India’s independence movement, and later became a broadcaster for Radio Cairo’s Swahili service. He was also associated with Sauti Ya Uhuru Ya Afrika — “Voice of African Freedom” — which broadcast anti-colonial messages in Swahili into East Africa during the 1950s and 1960s.

Rashad’s story was brought to light by Tony Omondi, a Kenyan researcher living in Mumbai and Assogo Dyan Daniel, a young Gabonese-Ivorian painter through an exhibition at Colaba’s Strangers House titled: ‘Uhuru Ya Afrika – Africa’s Freedom’.

Modern Ties | India–Zanzibar connection.

Today, that connection is taking a new form. IIT Madras Zanzibar, India’s first international IIT campus, is bringing Indian students and faculty into direct contact with Zanzibar and the wider East African region, including through Swahili language and cultural exchange.

Interestingly, India’s apex policy think tank NITI Aayog says students and faculty at the campus are encouraged to learn Swahili as part of cultural integration.

From heritage to modern ties

The story of Swahili is not only a story about language. It is a story about movement—of people, ideas, commerce, culture and political thought across the Indian Ocean. As India deepens its contemporary engagement with East Africa, Swahili diaspora everywhere in the Globe also have an opportunity to connect and turn cultural knowledge into new relationships with diverse societies such as Canada in education, business and diplomacy just to name the few.

As Canada looking for diversification of their economy and away from the U.S dependency – The moment for Canada’s Swahili speaking community has arrive to turn non historical relationships into Modern Ties.
