Ceasefire Holds but Cracks Emerge as Washington and Tehran Trade Warnings

Fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States is under increasing strain as both sides exchange accusations while cautiously returning to negotiations. The truce—brokered earlier this month to halt weeks of escalating conflict—has reduced large-scale hostilities but remains vulnerable to collapse amid unresolved disputes over nuclear policy, sanctions, and maritime security.
Tensions escalated again after Iran reimposed restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to call the move a “serious violation” of the ceasefire while insisting talks would continue. He warned that failure to reach an agreement could trigger renewed strikes, stating the U.S. is offering a “very fair and reasonable deal.”

Iranian officials, however, have pushed back, emphasizing sovereignty and distrust of U.S. intentions. Parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared, “It is impossible for others to pass through the Strait of Hormuz while we cannot,” linking maritime restrictions to the ongoing U.S. blockade. Meanwhile, Iran’s leadership maintains that “many gaps remain” in negotiations, particularly over uranium enrichment and sanctions relief.

Despite the rhetoric, both sides signal openness to diplomacy. Iranian officials say they are prepared for peace under the right conditions, while Washington has confirmed a new round of talks in Pakistan. Analysts note that the ceasefire may be extended if a preliminary framework is reached, though deep disagreements persist.

With the truce nearing expiration, the coming days are seen as critical. The outcome of renewed talks will likely determine whether the ceasefire evolves into a lasting agreement—or unravels into further confrontation.
