TORONTO — A fire broke out Sunday at 359 Yonge St., home to Zanzibar, a historic establishment in downtown Toronto, prompting a response from Toronto Fire Services.
Fire Chief Jim Jessop notified officials of the active fire at the building earlier Sunday. There were no reports of injuries, but officials said the building’s roof was compromised in the incident.
The fire was brought under control after firefighters worked to protect adjoining buildings from the blaze. Fire investigators have been called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
The incident has raised concerns about the historic building and its place within the downtown Yonge Street streetscape.
In a statement, officials acknowledged the building’s historic significance and said their office would reach out to the property owner in the coming days to offer assistance following the incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
