DODOMA, Tanzania – Tanzania’s Attorney General, Hamza S. Johari, says the 2025 general election for president, members of parliament and councillors is lawful because it has followed the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania and national election laws.
Johari delivered the remarks during a news conference at his office in Mtumba, in the capital city of Dodoma, on Oct. 28, 2025.
He said the 2025 general election complies with the requirements set out in the 1977 Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Johari added that every Tanzanian who has reached the age of 18 has the right to participate in presidential, parliamentary and local government elections, as specified in the Constitution.
“Our Constitution’s Article 5(1) gives every Tanzanian citizen who has reached the age of 18 the right to vote in elections conducted in Tanzania by its citizens,” he said.
Johari also reminded the public that under constitutional provisions adopted by citizens, elections for president, parliament and councillors are held every five years. He cited Articles 42(2) and 65(1) of the Constitution, along with Section 56(1) of the 2024 Election Act.
“Please share this message with all citizens. The five-year period has ended in accordance with the Constitution, and the election taking place tomorrow is also constitutional. All candidates for president, parliament and councillor positions across the country have been nominated according to the Constitution. Therefore, this election is lawful,” Johari said.
He further warned that anyone planning to disrupt the election or influence citizens not to participate will be committing an offence under Section 129 of the 2024 Election Act.
