Beloved Crossing Guard Seeks New Opportunities
James Makusa, a familiar face in Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighborhood, is looking for help. For 18 months, Makusa has been a dedicated crossing guard, ensuring kids and parents safely navigate Garden and Sunnyside Avenues. His warm smile and personalized greetings have made him a community staple.
However, despite his passion for the job, Makusa struggles to make ends meet due to the low pay. Originally from Zambia, where he worked as a bus driver, Makusa moved to Canada seeking better opportunities. After initially living in a shelter, he found part-time work as a crossing guard with aid from a local organization.
Makusa has been tirelessly applying for full-time jobs at companies like Air Canada, Amazon and Walmart, but hasn’t received any offers. A near-miss with a fraudulent job agent, who demanded $3,000 to secure employment, left him wary.
Seeking help, Makusa turned to social media, posting on the neighborhood Facebook group. His plea for job leads or advice generated dozens of supportive comments from community members.
