While on an official visit to Beijing, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canadian citizens will soon be able to enter China without a visa.

Beijing is moving toward expanded visa-free travel policies, part of a broader strategy to boost tourism and international exchange. Chinese authorities recently indicated that Canadian citizens may soon be able to enter mainland China without a visa for up to 30 days, following high-level discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The policy, however, remains a diplomatic commitment until officially enacted by China’s National Immigration Administration.

This potential addition aligns with Beijing’s existing unilateral visa-free framework that already covers more than 45 countries, enabling stays of up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits and transit. The expansion reflects China’s post-pandemic efforts to attract global visitors; official data show significant increases in foreign arrivals under visa-exemption schemes during recent holiday periods.


Separately, China’s extended visa-free policies already benefit citizens of numerous European and other states through agreements valid through December 31, 2026, allowing short-term entry without traditional visa procedures.
