MAWIMBI — Waves of Change for Zanzibar’s Women Seaweed Farmers

Along the shores of Zanzibar, from Paje to Pemba, thousands of women enter the ocean each day with determination, sustaining their families and preserving a way of life deeply connected to the identity and resilience of the Swahili Coast through seaweed farming. For decades, this often-overlooked industry has supported households, empowered coastal women, enabled families to educate their children, and improved livelihoods across Zanzibar’s coastal communities. Today, however, these communities face mounting challenges driven by climate change, including rising ocean temperatures, declining seaweed yields, and limited access to technology, financing, and international markets. Despite these obstacles, Zanzibar’s women seaweed farmers continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

As a Canada-based platform rooted in the Swahili Coast, Pamoja International Team Canada HuB (PITCH), in partnership with the Zanzibar Canadian Diaspora Association (ZACADIA), seeks to serve as a bridge between these coastal communities and Canadian partners, institutions, researchers, and blue economy stakeholders.

At the heart of both PITCH and ZACADIA is the Marine Women’s Innovation Mwani Blue Initiative (MAWIMBI) — a name inspired by the Swahili words mwani (“seaweed”) and mawimbi (“waves”). The initiative reflects the deep connection between coastal communities and the Indian Ocean, while symbolizing resilience, movement, and opportunity.

MAWIMBI is a commitment to strengthening ties between Zanzibar and Canada in ways that advance women-led livelihoods, gender equality, economic empowerment, climate resilience, and sustainable opportunities for future generations.
