In May 2026, Msimulizi Community News presented the Swahili Heritage Month idea to Toronto-Center MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam, who listened to our vision and helped bring it to Queen’s Park. In June, the Bill 135, the Swahili Heritage Month Act, 2026, passed its first reading with support from MPPs across Ontario’s three main political parties,
As the convener of the Ontario Swahili Heritage Month initiative, Msimulizi Community News brought together the Swahili speaking communities from all background and others from GTA’s diverse communities for the official announcement at Queens Park.
Over the summer, we worked with Swahili-speaking communities and friends across Ontario to gather hundreds of signatures in support of Swahili Heritage Month. We also reached out and garnered support of the MPP’s from all Ontario’s political parties. It is very likely the Bill 135 will pass in Fall, 2026 on its Second Reading.
Now, this is where you come in.
We invite you to join us at Queen’s Park for the second reading of Bill 135-2026, when the petition will be presented to Ontario legislators this Fall.
