Canadian Citizenship Test Moves Online: What Swahili-Speaking Applicants Need to Know

TORONTO — For Swahili-speaking permanent residents on the path to Canadian citizenship, the citizenship test is now a more digital experience: most applicants will take the test online, from wherever they are, rather than attending a traditional testing location.

Under the current Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) process, most citizenship applicants are invited to complete the test online unless they require an accommodation. Applicants receive an email invitation with a 30-day window in which to take the test, and they have up to three chances to pass.

The test consists of 20 questions covering Canadian history, geography, government, laws, economy, symbols, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Applicants have 45 minutes and must answer at least 15 questions correctly to pass.

But the online format comes with specific technical requirements.

Applicants need a desktop computer, laptop or tablet with a webcam, and must use Chrome or Safari. The test cannot be taken on a mobile phone, and applicants must have a reliable internet connection.

During the test, IRCC uses the webcam to take random photographs to verify the applicant’s identity and ensure the test is being completed alone. Applicants cannot use study materials, other devices or additional browser windows while taking the test.

For Swahili-speaking applicants, another important point is that the citizenship test is offered only in English or French. The test itself does not assess English or French language ability; language requirements are assessed separately in the citizenship process.

IRCC recommends preparing with the official Discover Canada study guide, which is the basis for the citizenship test.

For applicants with accessibility or other needs, alternative arrangements may be available, including an in-person or Microsoft Teams test.
