OTTAWA — Aug. 11, 2026 — Tanzania and Canada are looking to deepen economic cooperation, with trade, investment, critical minerals, clean energy and infrastructure emerging as key areas for collaboration as Canada seeks to diversify its international trade relationships amid continued U.S. tariff uncertainty.

The discussions took place Tuesday during a courtesy meeting between Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Canada Joseph Sokoine and Yasir Naqvi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade and Secretary of State for International Development.

Naqvi expressed readiness to support Tanzania’s economic diplomacy efforts and help connect Tanzanian initiatives with relevant Canadian institutions and stakeholders.

Sokoine outlined Tanzania’s priority investment sectors, including agriculture, critical minerals, clean energy, infrastructure and public-private partnerships.

He also highlighted Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050, which seeks to accelerate economic transformation and create a more conducive environment for investment.

The meeting comes as Canada faces growing pressure to diversify its trade relationships amid continuing tensions with the United States. The federal government has publicly emphasized the need to strengthen Canada’s economic resilience and expand trade partnerships beyond traditional markets.

For Canada, Tanzania offers potential opportunities in sectors aligned with emerging global priorities, particularly critical minerals, renewable energy, agriculture and sustainable infrastructure.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the longstanding Tanzania-Canada relationship through trade, investment, innovation and sustainable economic development.

The discussions could provide a foundation for greater engagement between Canadian businesses and Tanzanian investment opportunities, particularly in sectors where Canada has expertise, capital and technology and Tanzania is seeking international partnerships.
