Bridging Home and Abroad: Tanzania Officials Engage Diaspora in Toronto

Toronto, Canada – In a continuing effort to connect with Tanzanians abroad, two of Tanzania’s leading government institutions — the Tanzania Investment and Export Zone Authority (TISEZA) and the Tanzania Commercial Bank (TCB) — held an information session with members of the Tanzanian diaspora at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Toronto on Saturday.

The gathering reflected Tanzania’s growing outreach to its global citizens, showcasing investment opportunities and reinforcing the vital role of the diaspora in the nation’s economic growth.

Gilead Teri, Director of TISEZA, emphasized the government’s openness and readiness to work with Tanzanians living overseas, describing them as key partners in national development.

Many in Canada’s Tanzanian community have long expressed interest in investing back home. Yet, misinformation, lack of clarity, and past experiences have often held them back from taking advantage of opportunities across the East African nation.

Representing the banking sector, Lilian Mtali, TCB’s Director of Retail and SME Banking, encouraged Tanzanians abroad to open accounts with TCB, assuring them of the bank’s reliability, oversight, and commitment to supporting their financial and investment goals.

Both TISEZA and TCB officials also acknowledged the need for modernization, admitting that while progress is being made, more work is needed in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance service delivery. They invited diaspora professionals in technology and research to lend their expertise in building stronger institutional capacity.

The Tanzanian delegation will continue its outreach efforts with a community engagement session in Calgary on October 18.
