Raila Amolo Odinga – Kenyan Statesman and Reformer Dies at the age of 80

Kenyan President William Ruto has declared seven days of mourning in the country.

Odinga was a political leader, statesman, and advocate for democracy. Born in 1945 in Maseno, Kenya, he is the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice president. Educated in East Africa and Germany, Raila trained as an engineer before entering politics.

He became a central figure in Kenya’s pro-democracy movement during the 1980s and 1990s, enduring imprisonment for his role in championing multi-party democracy. As a reformist, he played a key role in the introduction of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, promoting devolution and citizens’ rights.

Over his career, Raila has served as Member of Parliament, Minister for Roads and Public Works, and Prime Minister (2008–2013). Known affectionately as “Baba” (Father) by supporters, he has remained a powerful voice for social justice, inclusion, and national unity.

Beyond politics, Odinga is recognized internationally for his efforts toward peace and African integration, embodying resilience and leadership grounded in service to the people of Kenya and the continent.
